Product Description
The University of Iowa has been fielding football teams since 1889, but few have been more successful than the recent squads coached by Kirk Ferentz. In the newly revised and updated trade paper edition of Tales from the Iowa Sidelines, fans can indulge in an up-close view on everything that has taken place in Iowa football through the 2004 season, including the marvelous 2002 season. In 2002 the Hawkeyes tied for the Big Ten title, won a school-record 11 games, and played USC in the Orange Bowl. Award-winning author Ron Maly covers every gripping moment that took place both on and off the field in a season that produced an 8-0 conference record - from the exciting 42-35 survival in overtime at Penn State to the stunning 34-9 victory at Michigan and the 45-21 win at Minnesota that wrapped up a perfect Big Ten schedule. Readers can experience a rich Hawkeye history through the vivid memories of captain Erwin Prasse and teammate George "Red" Frye as they flash back to the 1939 Ironmen, led by Heisman Trophy-winner Nile Kinnick. They can also take a look at Howard Jones's unbeaten teams in 1921 and 1922, Forest Evashevski's two Rose Bowl championship teams in the 1950's, and how Hayden Fry brought the Iowa program back from the scrap heap in the 1980's and '90's. Tales from the Iowa Sidelines offers the interesting scenarios that brought All-Americans Calvin Jones and Alex Karras to Iowa, the touching story of how former star Bob Stoops placed his Rose Bowl ring in his father's casket, and why the 1985 Hawkeyes were the top-ranked team in America for five weeks. Ron Maly leads the way on a nostalgic trip with the beloved Hawkeyes through over 100 years of triumphs and tragedies, fun and frustration, and legend and lore in the revised and updated Tales from the Iowa Sidelines.
